Healthy Travel Tips

Traveling is one of my favorite ways to spend long weekends, holidays and vacations. Getting out of our normal routine and visiting unfamiliar places is in my opinion an important part of a well-balanced life. That being said, it is also important to maintain some normalcy in our routines while we are away. Keep reading for a few of my best tips on keeping up your healthy habits while traveling.

Snack Responsibly

Packing a few food items that can be eaten on the go helps make maintaining a routine easier. While traveling it is easy to forget to eat or choose a less healthy option based on limited choices. To avoid falling victim to decisions made based on hunger, packing items such as fruits, green juices (if you aren't flying) and homemade granola bars can help you stay on track. It is also important to consider the environment you will be in. So, if you are going to be at an event such as a conference it may make more sense to bring something that is quick, easy and does not require clean up.

Do Your Homework

Researching the area is one of the easiest ways to ensure you are prepared. Start by looking up local restaurants. This way you have a prequalified list of places to eat at while you are away. Another way to stay on track is to research local grocery stores. Picking up a few breakfast items such as yogurt, fruit, etc. helps ensure that your day gets off to the right start. If there is a refrigerator in your room, I suggest picking up green juices to drink in the morning about 20 minutes before breakfast. If juice isn't your thing, then try lemon water. It helps boost the immune system, improves digestion and cleanses the liver among other benefits.

Maintain a sense of normalcy

Being in a new environment can throw off our routines. It is especially easy to pick up less healthy meals when we are unprepared because they are usually convenient and affordable. Packing snacks and preparing a lists of restaurants may seem tedious, but it will save time during the trip. It also makes the transition more seamless once you are back to your normal routine. Continuously practicing healthy eating habits will make the choices easier over time and eventually it will become a hassle free process.

Eating like traveling should be enjoyable. At times all of the do's and don'ts make healthy living seem unattainable, but it is accessible to everyone. In a time where information is all around us, it is easy to become bogged down by it. Instead, take what works for you and apply it. Leave the rest. Happy travels.
